The Broad Museum Parking Structure stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and urban functionality, representing a collaborative effort between Gensler, LA, and DS+R Architects. From 2010 to 2015, this poured-in-place concrete structure, utilizing reinforced steel and a flat plate design, took shape as the foundation for the new Broad Foundation art museum, reshaping the downtown landscape of Los Angeles.
Designed to bear the extreme loads of the art museum above, the Broad Museum Parking Structure ingeniously transfers these forces through its podium deck and perimeter walls to a bell caisson foundation system. This structural feat not only ensures the stability and integrity of the museum but also establishes a foundation of strength and resilience for the entire complex.
Beyond its structural function, the parking structure serves as a vital hub for museum patrons, CRA employees, and downtown visitors alike. Spanning three levels, it offers ample parking space while also housing the museum's mechanical systems, central plant, and operations center. This multifunctional design maximizes efficiency and utility, seamlessly integrating essential infrastructure with everyday functionality.
Mechanically ventilated to ensure optimal air quality, the parking structure also embraces natural daylight, with a significant portion of its exterior left open to illuminate the space. While one side of the structure remains completely below grade, careful attention has been paid to security and environmental considerations, ensuring a safe and sustainable environment for all who utilize the facility.
