Harvard-Westlake School embarks on an innovative parking structure project aimed at enhancing safety and convenience for students and staff while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding environment. This visionary initiative not only provides 750 parking spaces across three levels but also features an athletic practice field atop the structure, maximizing space efficiency and promoting a holistic approach to campus design.
Nestled into a steep hillside adjacent to the street, the structure is meticulously designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. Retaining walls on three sides reduces the mass of the structure, blending it seamlessly into the landscape and minimizing its visual impact. The integration of landscaping and architectural elements further enhances the site's cohesion, creating a unified and aesthetically pleasing environment.
Constructed with a cast-in-place and post-tensioned concrete frame, the parking structure boasts a moment frame lateral resisting system, ensuring both structural integrity and visual transparency. This innovative design not only enhances security but also promotes natural ventilation throughout the facility, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for users.
The pedestrian bridge, a striking feature of the project, is designed as an open truss frame structure, providing a light-filled passage over the busy street and onto the main school campus. This thoughtful design element not only ensures safe and convenient pedestrian access but also adds to the architectural charm of the campus.
Throughout the design process, multiple iterations were developed in collaboration with the school to achieve the desired objectives. The final design reflects a commitment to minimizing the visual impact of the parking structure while delivering timeless architecture in this unique site location. Laser-cut metal panels, security screens, and cantilevered concrete slabs are seamlessly integrated to create a visually striking and efficient architectural solution that aligns with the school's vision and values.
In essence, the Harvard-Westlake School parking structure project exemplifies a harmonious blend of functionality, sustainability, and architectural excellence. By prioritizing safety, convenience, and aesthetic integrity, the project sets a new standard for campus development and community enhancement.
