Sony Pictures Culver Parking Structure Expansion
TRC Parkitects was the design architect of this design-build project which completed the master plan parking development for the Culver Parking Structure is located adjacent to the primary studio lot entrance. The project consisted of a 6-level horizontal expansion and a partial vertical expansion of the existing structure that TRCP designed previously. The expansion also includes a basketball court on the top level of the horizontal portion of the structure and dedicated parking for the studio executives. The structure addition provides an additional 1,321 parking spaces on 762,055 square feet.
The parking structure was constructed on the fully operational studio campus. Robust construction sequencing and work schedule modifications were implemented to mitigate the impacts of noise, dust, vibration, vehicular/pedestrian circulation routes, and utility and fire service disruption. The existing parking structure had to remain operational throughout the construction of the addition. The construction modifications were carefully detailed and executed resulting in no schedule delays or increased costs.
Operational Factors and Site Logistics
- The project site was very tight and required construction laydown to be provided within the footprint of the parking structure and a a small adjacent lot.
- The active studio campus vehicular and pedestrian circulation had to be maintained throughout the construction process requiring the contractor to complete concrete pours during off hours to mitigate the impacts.
- The parking addition required the integration of additional accessible parking and egress within the existing parking structure.
- Specific design and details were incorporated into the parking structure to provide a full basketball court on the roof level of the structure addition, to provide a level court surface and to mitigate vibration.
Challenges
- Completed the project on an active campus with sensitive surrounding buildings and functions
- Maintained available parking in the existing parking structure throughout the construction process
- Vertical and horizontal expansion areas constructed
- Code upgrades provided for the expansion areas only
- Maintained the architectural character of the structure to replicate the existing phase 1 structure
